The chemical intermediate Epichlorohydrin is widely used in the production of epoxy resins, glycerol, elastomers, water-treatment resins and specialty chemical derivatives thanks to its highly reactive epoxide ring and chloromethyl functionality. One of the major applications of this compound is as a glycidyl ether precursor, where it reacts with bisphenol A to form diglycidyl ether monomers that are then polymerised or cross-linked to make epoxy coatings, adhesives, composites and laminates used in demanding structural and industrial applications. Because of its versatility, epichlorohydrin is also utilised for manufacturing high wet-strength paper resins, ion-exchange materials, surfactants, elastomeric compounds and other speciality intermediates where durability, chemical resistance or tight control of functional groups is required. The production and handling of the compound require strict safety and process controls due to its flammability, reactivity, and classification as a probable human carcinogen; care must be exercised to minimise exposure and manage vapour risks during manufacturing, storage and downstream use.
